AV Aureus (Rome ca. AD 107, for Divus Vespasian, restoration coin by Traianus, 6.88 g, possibly some minor clipping) - IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG Laureate head right / IMP CAES TRAIAN AVG GER DAC PP REST Jewish captive kneeling to right below trophy (RIC (Traianus) 827, R3 / Calicó 706) - After the return to Rome in AD 107, after the Dacian Wars, Traianus began impressive building projects such as the Aqua Traiana and the Forum Traiani. He financed these projects among other things with the Dacian war booty, and also he melted down old worn aurei to strike new ones, at a slightly lower weight. It was during this time that he struck the restoration types such as this coin, to honour his deified predecessors, in this case Vespasianus. Historically a very interesting piece, VF, an extremely rare coin!
